A heritage site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 30 June 2012, telling the story of an island economy built on pearl diving, and Bahrain's second World Heritage Site after Bahrain Fort. It includes three oyster beds in the northern waters, a stretch of coast with Bu Maher Fort at the southern tip of Muharraq, and 17 buildings in the old town linked by a 3.5-km visitor path. Along the way stand the houses of pearl merchants and boat captains, among them Siyadi House and its mosque with their carved plaster and wood façades, plus old shops and majlis halls, restored and some turned into small museums and cultural centres. Walking the path is free; it usually starts from the visitor centre, and some houses open at set times. Go in the morning or late afternoon in winter, with comfortable shoes for the lanes.
