Dolphin Bay on Fernando de Noronha is where schools of spinner dolphins, known for leaps in which they spin around in the air, gather every day, and it is considered the most regular place in the world to see the species. Protecting them was one of the reasons the national marine park was created in 1988. You do not go down into the bay itself: diving is forbidden there and boats may not stop nearby, as the dolphins come to rest. Visitors watch them from the Dolphin Lookout on the cliff above, and with binoculars their behaviour is clear to see. A scientific project to protect the spinner dolphins has worked on the island since 1990. The best time is early morning, when the dolphins enter the bay. The lookout is near Baía do Sancho, so the two are easy to combine.
