The largest freshwater lake in north China, in the Xiong'an New Area east of Baoding, gathering the waters of nine rivers that run down from the Taihang Mountains. It is made of 146 lakes large and small, linked by more than 3,700 channels across 366 km², with 36 villages on its islands and shores. Reeds and lotus cover most of its shallow water, so in summer the channels become a maze between walls of tall reeds and flowers; it is nicknamed the «kidney of north China» and is home to many kinds of fish and water birds. The one-ticket pass costs CNY 185, 148 from November to April, covering the water buses between piers and entry to the sites, open from 7 am to 4.30 pm, per visitor guides; it is loveliest in the lotus season of July and August.
