Baldwin Street is a short residential street in Dunedin, its small wooden houses tilted at odd angles along a road that climbs steeply up a hillside. From the top you see the street drop sharply towards the valley and the rooftops. Guinness World Records calls it the steepest street in the world, meaning no street gains more height in 10 horizontal metres. It runs about 350 m, rising from 30 m to 100 m above sea level. The upper part is concrete and climbs 47.2 m in 161.2 m, with a maximum slope of about 35 per cent near the top. Visitors walk up the footpath or steps, take tilted photos and walk back down. The street is a dead end for cars at the top. It is about 3.5 km in a straight line northeast of central Dunedin. Respect the residents, as it is a residential street, and do not stand in the roadway.
