Among Kalimantan's largest.
Balikpapan's largest mosque and one of Kalimantan's biggest, part of the Islamic Center complex on a hill in the city, with a great dome and four minarets visible from afar, broad courtyards and educational facilities. Its name means the city of faith. The prayer hall is spacious and bright, with geometric ornament, Arabic calligraphy and great chandeliers; the mosque holds thousands and fills for Friday prayer, Ramadan and Eid. Around it are neat gardens and a halal food area on special occasions. Entry is free. Non-Muslims visit outside prayer times in modest dress. It is the handiest mosque for Friday prayer in Balikpapan and loveliest in the evening when lit. Balikpapan is the gateway to Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan.
