Yes, especially on a cloudy or rainy day when the summits close or the view vanishes โ Ballenberg is enjoyable in almost any weather, relatively cheap compared with mountain tickets, and for children more fun than any cable car. Make it your ready fallback if the weather turns, or a full day with Brienz and Giessbach.

Ballenberg is Switzerland's national open-air museum: **more than a hundred original historic rural buildings** from every canton in the country โ farmhouses, barns, mills, bakeries, chapels and cheese dairies โ dismantled stone by stone from their original sites, moved and rebuilt here across 66 hectares of meadow and forest above Lake Brienz. It is not a static display: craftspeople actually work in the buildings before you โ carpenters, potters, blacksmiths, cheesemakers, bakers and weavers โ with farm animals of old Swiss breeds, traditional plant gardens, and restaurants serving regional dishes to old recipes. Children feed the animals and try the crafts. The grounds are vast (half a day at minimum, with an internal shuttle to shorten it), and it is the best place in Switzerland to understand how the Swiss lived before tourism and banking. Seasonal: open from mid-April to late October.
