Balneário Camboriú is a coastal city in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, 80 km north of Florianópolis, built on steep hills that drop to the sea and one of South America's best-known resorts: about 140,000 people live there, swelling to over a million in summer. Its heart is the Central Beach and the Avenida Atlântica boulevard alongside it. Hotels, restaurants, cafés and a promenade line the boulevard, and off the city lies the small uninhabited Ilha das Cabras, lit up at night, which a boat styled as an old pirate ship circles from Laranjeiras beach. From the Barra Sul end of the beach the cable car sets off to link the city with Laranjeiras. The beach is free and always open. Travellers fly into nearby Navegantes airport, and summer from December to February is very busy, so book accommodation early.
