A treetop bridge

Protected tropical rainforest north of Balikpapan, named after the giant bangkirai tree and best known for a suspension bridge strung between treetops about thirty metres up, on which visitors walk above the forest canopy and see from above a world of leaves, birds and insects invisible from the ground. Walking trails run between giant trees hundreds of years old, where monkeys and hornbills may be seen and the forest's sounds rise all around. There are wooden lodges for anyone wanting a night in the forest and a sunrise from the bridge. There is an area entry fee, with the bridge extra. The bridge sways a little, does not suit those afraid of heights, and sometimes closes in bad weather. Come early in the morning when the birds are active, with good shoes and insect repellent. It is about an hour and a half's drive.
