A Neolithic village of the Yangshao culture on the eastern edge of Xi'an, about 6,000 years old, found in the early 1950s and excavated in the years after; the museum built over it in 1958 was China's first museum on a Neolithic site. Under a great roof, walkways look down on the excavated village: the floors of round and square houses, many of them half sunk into the ground, storage pits, animal pens and the wide ditch that ringed the settlement. The galleries show its painted pottery, including basins decorated with fish and human faces, pointed-base jars for carrying water, and tools of stone and bone. Tickets are CNY 55 from March to November and CNY 40 in winter, and it is open from 8 am to 5.30 pm, to 5 pm in winter, per visitor guides. Two hours is enough.
