A wide curtain
Over limestone.
A broad waterfall flowing over smooth limestone in a forested valley within a national park north of Makassar, like a wide curtain of water spilling into a pool and river where visitors swim. The area has been known as the kingdom of butterflies since the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace visited in the nineteenth century and described many rare butterfly species here. Beside the falls are a small butterfly museum and a trail climbing to a small lake and a large cave with stalactites and stalagmites, visited with a torch or guide. Children play in the shallows at the foot of the falls, and it is crowded with families on holidays. Tickets are higher for foreigners than locals, with a small fee for a cave guide. Avoid buying the mounted butterflies on sale, to support their protection. Come on a weekday morning with modest swimwear and water shoes. It pairs with Rammang-Rammang in a single day.
