A clear mountain lake among the forested stone pillars of Wulingyuan, formed in the 1970s when villagers dammed the gorge for electricity and the valley filled with water; it's about 2.5 km long with an average depth of 72 m. Visitors climb a short stairway beside a waterfall to the lake pier, then take a boat among the peaks mirrored in the green water, while Tujia singers perform folk songs from small boats along the banks. Scenes from the famous Chinese TV series «Journey to the West» were filmed here, and short trails and small caves surround the lake, making it a calm stop after the crowds of Yuanjiajie. Tickets run about CNY 96–121 depending on the season, including the boat ride, per visitor guides. A visit takes about two hours; mornings are best, when the water is still.
