Barra de Gramame is João Pessoa's southernmost beach, at the mouth of the Gramame River, which forms a small tongue of land with huts before meeting the sea. Its sandy area was built by sediment carried by the river; the geological formation is called a «barra», which gives the place its name. Though an open-sea beach, its water is calm, with reef formations, and the sand is light and soft. Dunes, mangroves and outings by jangada, the traditional raft boat, or by kayak round out a visit. It suits a calm day between river and sea a short way from the city, with a jangada or kayak trip through the mangroves. Check the tide before swimming near the river mouth.
