Barra de São Miguel is a beach town south of Maceió that became a municipality in 1963 and is considered the liveliest resort in Alagoas. It begins at the mouth of the Niquim river, and reefs off its beach break the waves, so the sea looks like a wide, calm pool, with pale sand and very blue water. It was a fishing village and a boatbuilding centre that launched the largest ship of its day in north-eastern Brazil, before declining in the 1930s. Today it divides into Barra Velha, the old town with most of the shops, and Praia Bonita and Barra Mar, where the holiday homes are. Boats leave its marina daily for Gunga beach in the neighbouring municipality of Roteiro.
