Barra do Cunhaú is a beach village in Canguaretama, about 90 kilometres south of Natal, where the river meets the sea. Its economy rests on tourism, fishing and shrimp farming, and its name comes from Tupi for «woman's water», from cunhã, woman, and 'y, water. Its best-known outing is a catamaran trip on the green waters of the Curimataú River through mangrove forest, with a stop to walk barefoot along a muddy mangrove trail and watch traditional crab catching. From Boca da Barra, boats cross to the beaches of Restinga island along a sea inlet where three rivers meet and fresh and salt water mix. Reefs near the shore form natural pools good for swimming, and the area strings together four beaches, the largest Pontal, with most of the stalls, restaurants and inns. Full-day trips run from Natal; check prices and the weather.
