Barra Grande is the main village of the Maraú peninsula on the southern coast of Bahia, between Camamu Bay and the Atlantic, and the visitors' base for exploring the peninsula's beaches and natural pools. The easiest way in is by speedboat from the town of Camamu: boats leave about hourly and cross the bay in about half an hour for R$15-30. The dirt road from Itacaré is longer, depends on road conditions and suits vehicles that can handle rough tracks. From the village it is about a ten-minute walk to Ponta do Mutá for the sunset, and the natural pools of Taipus de Fora lie about 7 km away, at their best from September to February at low tide.
