The Basilica of Bom Jesus is a large church of red laterite stone in Old Goa, with an ornate three-storey Baroque facade, set among green lawns and palm trees. Work began in 1594 and it was consecrated in 1605, in Old Goa, then the capital of Portuguese India. Its name means «Good Jesus» in Portuguese. It holds the remains of Saint Francis Xavier, which makes it a pilgrimage site. It is part of the Churches and Convents of Goa UNESCO World Heritage Site and was made a basilica in 1946. Scholars note that the building needs significant conservation work. You stand before the red facade to see its carving, then walk across the broad lawns to the nearby churches of Old Goa, such as the Sé Cathedral across the road, and the ruins of old Portuguese churches and convents scattered around. It is about 9 km in a straight line east of Panaji. Dress modestly to enter and keep quiet during mass.
