For the view, yes โ especially by car, when it costs five minutes. On foot make it an afternoon stroll: a quiet climb through the houses, the view, then down to the lake.
A women's order founded in Annecy in 1610 by Saint Francis de Sales โ the town's patron, whose name is everywhere โ and Jane de Chantal; both are entombed here. Annecy holds a special place in Catholicism because of them.
Half an hour with photos; an hour if walking both ways. It is not a substitute for the lakefront stroll โ it is its upstairs complement.

The Basilica of the Visitation crowns Annecy's highest hill, its slim white tower showing in the background of nearly every picture of the town. It was built in the early twentieth century as the mother church of the Visitation order, founded in Annecy four centuries ago. The interior is spacious, with marble columns, stained glass and gold mosaic in a modern manner, and holds the tombs of the order's two founders, which draw a steady Catholic pilgrimage. Most visitors, though, climb for another reason. That reason is the terrace: from the basilica's forecourt all Annecy spreads out โ old town, blue lake, mountains behind โ the widest view available without a mountain hike. You can drive to the door, or walk half an hour up from the centre.
