A large rainforest-covered island in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, much of it within Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, Panama's first marine park, created in 1988 and covering more than thirteen thousand hectares of forest, coral reef and mangroves. Its best-known beach is Red Frog Beach, golden sand between forest and surf, named for tiny shiny red frogs living in the forest behind it, colourful poison frogs, so watch and never touch. On the north coast lies long, wild Wizard Beach, reached by a forest trail. At the island's tip is the small village of Old Bank, home to people of Afro-Caribbean descent who speak their own local creole, with colourful wooden houses over the water. Coral reefs around the island offer snorkelling. Waves on the northern beaches are strong and currents sometimes dangerous, so swim with care. Never feed or touch wild animals, and watch them from a distance.
