Peja's Old Bazaar is a market that grew up in Ottoman times in the town centre near the Lumbardh of Peja, between two parallel residential quarters. It was historically the street of blacksmiths and carpenters, and it also held a farm produce market for the surrounding villages. The bazaar was completely destroyed at least twice, in 1943 under Italian occupation and in the Kosovo war of 1998–99. It was then rebuilt in full after the war in the old Ottoman style, and it is now the town's main market and a protected monument of Kosovo; its main street is known as Çarshia e Gjatë, the «Long Bazaar». It is lined with small shops, cafés serving Turkish coffee, sweet shops and grills, with the Bajrakli Mosque at its centre. It is a pleasant place to stroll in the late afternoon, free to wander, and halal food is easy to find.
