The Bear Sanctuary is a home for brown bears rescued from captivity, about 22 kilometres from Pristina near Lake Badovc. For many years bears were kept in small cages outside restaurants to draw in customers, until keeping them privately was banned in 2010 and they needed somewhere new to live. The animal welfare group Four Paws founded the sanctuary in 2013 together with KFOR, the Municipality of Pristina and the Ministry of Environment, and it opened to visitors in May that year. The bears now live in large enclosures that resemble their natural habitat, across 16 hectares of woodland, and visitors follow paths that look over them. There is also an environmental education centre, a playground and maze for children, and a restaurant. The sanctuary's own website gives tickets of EUR 4 for adults and EUR 2 for children aged 4 to 14, with under-4s free and guided tours at EUR 10. Its pages give different opening hours, so check before you go.
