The best-known and liveliest beach on Mahé, a long curve of fine white sand in a wide bay on the north-west coast, shaded by takamaka and coconut trees, with the mountainous island of Silhouette on the horizon. The bay's water is clear and shelves gently, so it suits swimming and families most of the year, and it is especially calm from May to October, when the south-east trade winds blow on the other side of the island. Lifeguards watch the beach during the day. Diving and snorkelling trips to nearby reefs, glass-bottom boats and water-skiing leave from Beau Vallon, and hotels and restaurants line the shore. On Wednesday evenings a popular beach market sets up with Creole food stalls and music, per visitor guides. The beach is public and free, and sunset here is one of Mahé's finest sights, as the sun drops behind Silhouette Island.
