Base yourself in Echternach. In the morning walk a section of the Mullerthal Trail to the Schiessentümpel, at midday move to Beaufort for the two castles, and in the evening return to Echternach for Willibrord's abbey and the old square. By car the day is entirely comfortable; by public transport it is possible but needs the timetable checked, as rural buses run less often — and the transport is free either way.

Beaufort has two castles side by side rather than one, and that is the reason to go: a large medieval ruin of the eleventh to sixteenth centuries, and directly beside it an elegant Renaissance château of 1649 — a few steps apart. The comparison explains a complete shift in architectural history. The medieval castle is built for defence: thick walls, narrow openings, a moat and towers, with no windows and no comfort. The château next to it was built after the age of siege had ended: wide symmetrical windows, high ceilings and gardens — the house had become a place to live rather than to hold out in. The medieval castle can be visited freely throughout the season; the Renaissance château is by guided tour on limited dates, and keeps furniture and possessions still in place. Beaufort is also known for the blackcurrant liqueur produced at the castle itself and offered for tasting. The site lies in a wooded valley within the Mullerthal region.
