Nepal's third-largest lake, a calm lake east of Pokhara ringed by green hills, farm terraces and forest. It is the quiet rural alternative to busy Phewa, without the long row of hotels and cafés, with villages, rice fields and fish farms along its shores. Visitors hire simple wooden boats at the jetty and row over still water between the hills, and on clear mornings the snowy Annapurna peaks appear above them. Walking paths run along the shore between fields and farmhouses. Above the lake is a ridge known for short hiking trails overlooking Begnas and its small neighbour Rupa, with a wide view over both lakes and the mountains. The nearby village has small eateries serving fresh lake fish. The lake is free, boats cost little, and buses come from Pokhara in under an hour. The clearest months are October to December and March to April; in the June-September monsoon the mountains hide behind cloud.

Begnas is quieter and more rural, without the hotel and café crowds, good for a boat trip and walks between fields.
