Northern China's best-known seaside resort, on the Bohai Sea coast west of Qinhuangdao city, whose beach runs some ten kilometres of fine sand and shallow water between rocks and pine-covered hills; it became an official summer resort in 1898, when foreigners living in Beijing built villas here, and Beijing residents still come in summer to escape the heat. Its best-known spot is Pigeon Nest Park, on a rock above the sea at its eastern end, where visitors gather at dawn to watch the sunrise over the water, and the area is also known as one of China's best places to watch migrating birds. Pigeon Nest Park costs CNY 25 and the public beaches are open, per visitor guides. Swim at guarded beaches, and note that the beaches get very crowded in July and August.

June and September are calmer than the July-August peak and still warm enough to swim, while spring and autumn suit birdwatching.
