The only cave open in the Tatra mountains: Belianska at Tatranská Kotlina was discovered in 1881 and electrically lit in 1896 — among Europe's first illuminated caves — and its open route runs over a kilometre with more than eight hundred steps up and down inside the mountain. Its chambers are large, with stalactites and stalagmites, stone waterfalls and pools, the best known being the Music Hall, whose exceptional acoustics host small concerts in season — classical music played inside the mountain, tens of metres down. The temperature holds around six degrees at high humidity: a coat is required even in August, and non-slip shoes matter because the steps stay permanently wet. It lies half an hour from Poprad by car or bus, with a steep twenty-minute forest climb from the car park to the cave mouth.
