Bellagio is a town in the province of Como in Lombardy, northern Italy, on Lake Como where its two southern arms branch, about 23 km northeast of Como in a straight line. Its position at the tip of the promontory, looking across the lake's northern arm towards the Alps, has long been famed for its beauty. Traces of human presence around Bellagio go back to the Palaeolithic, about 30,000 years ago, and a small fortified settlement may have stood on the promontory between the 7th and 5th centuries BC. The town is part of the «Triangolo Lariano» between the lake's two arms; the lake is also known by its Latin name, Lario. Yellow, pink and orange houses step up the tip of the promontory, with narrow stone stepped lanes climbing between them and arcades and cafés along the waterfront. The calm blue lake surrounds it, mirroring green mountains and distant peaks, with the gardens of historic villas all around. Visitors arrive by ferry from Como or from Varenna and Menaggio across the lake, wander the lanes and waterfront and visit the villa gardens. Many walk to the tip of the promontory to see both arms of the lake, and spring is when the gardens bloom.
