One of the longest and loveliest beaches in Mauritius, a long ribbon of fine white sand on the east coast, lined with casuarina trees and fronted by a wide lagoon in shades of turquoise and blue, sheltered by the distant reef. The east coast is quieter than the north and west, and large resort hotels stretch along this beach, but between them lies a wide public beach where Mauritians gather at weekends with their families, picnics and local food vans. The shallow, calm water suits swimming, paddling and snorkelling close to shore, and sunrise over the sea here is one of the island's finest sights. In the southern winter, from June to August, the south-east trade winds blow, making the beach breezier and cooler. The public beach is free and quieter on weekdays. It makes a comfortable base for the boat trip to Île aux Cerfs from the nearby village of Trou d'Eau Douce.
