Benagil is the Algarve's cosmic icon: a sea cathedral the waves carved in golden limestone — a dome pierced by an eye to the sky pouring a sun column onto an inner sand beach reachable only by water: the image that tops earth's most beautiful caves lists routinely. It is visited by cliff-tour boats from Benagil, Carvoeiro and Portimão marina (the tours chaining the coast's grottoes and arches) — or paddled by kayak and SUP from Benagil beach (a mere two hundred metres) for those wanting to stand on the inner sand: motorboats no longer land inside (protection), the paddle the sand's only road. Early morning is its golden law: calmer sea, deeper sun column, fewer boats — and rough water cancels entry outright, so set it early in your days for flexibility. From Faro an hour's drive — pair it with the neighbouring Seven Hanging Valleys cliff walk: the golden west's complete day.
