A colourful market in the heart of the mountain town of Berastagi at about 1,300 metres, selling the produce of the fertile Karo highlands fed by volcanic soil: the famous sweet oranges, passion fruit and its juice, strawberries, avocados, fresh vegetables and bright flowers. Stalls line up under awnings, Karo vendors stack fruit in neat piles and offer tastes, and at the edges are small eateries and grilled-corn sellers. On clear days the volcanoes Sibayak and Sinabung overlook the town. Wandering is free, prices are low compared with the cities, and polite bargaining is fine. Passion-fruit syrup and oranges are popular gifts to take back to Medan. The market is a stop on a Berastagi trip, with Gundaling hill and the Lumbini park. Mount Sinabung is active, so check its status before travelling to the highlands.
