In the summer season, usually May to October, on set days of the week at a set afternoon time, with illuminated displays on a few evenings. The schedule changes annually — check the official site before booking your trip, since this is the main reason to visit.
A fast train to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe in about ninety minutes, then a tram to the lower park entrance. It is better to take the bus up to the Hercules statue at the top and walk down with the water route — walking up is very hard. Allow a full day.

The largest hillside park in Europe, on a mountainside west of Kassel, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2013. What makes it exceptional is its water system. At the top of the park the colossal Hercules statue stands on a stone pyramid, and from it the Wasserspiele begin: water is released and descends through a chain of artificial cascades, channels and basins over about two kilometres, passing a Roman aqueduct, and ending in a fountain that shoots some fifty metres into the air in front of the palace. The whole system runs on gravity alone — no pumps — exactly as designed in the early eighteenth century. That means one essential practical point: the water displays run only on set days and at set times in the summer season, and are not daily. Check the schedule before travelling — the difference between seeing them and seeing a dry park is enormous. The park is free and always open; the palace holds a picture gallery on a ticket. The walking is uphill and long.
