Bernkastel-Kues is a town on the Middle Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany, about 36 km northeast of Trier and 61 km southwest of Koblenz in a straight line. It has about 7,800 residents. The town is known for winegrowing, is a recognised health resort, and is the birthplace of the medieval philosopher and scholar Nicholas of Cusa. The river divides it in two: Bernkastel on the right bank and Kues on the left. Its highest point is the Olymp hill at 415 metres, and the ruins of Landshut castle stand above the town. Colourful half-timbered houses with pointed roofs and small turrets line the riverbank, mirrored in the calm water, with steep slopes covered in rows of vines rising behind to the hilltops. A bridge links the two halves of the town, and cruise boats glide along the river. Visitors wander the market square and old lanes among the half-timbered houses and climb to the Landshut castle ruins for views over the river bend and vineyards. Many take Moselle river cruises, and autumn brings the grape harvest and wine festivals.
