Biester is Sintra's most recently unveiled secret: the dark Gothic palace on the Pena road stood closed to the public a century and a quarter until 2022 โ the Biester family house (1880s), its sombre towers and knife roof a deliberate dark Romanticism countering Pena's colours โ Polanski filmed The Ninth Gate in it. The interior is honestly family-kept: woodwork, murals, a music room and an astonishing stucco chapel โ the garden a camellia-and-fern wood overlooking the town valley with the National Palace and its chimneys in view. It is the clever addition for Sintra's returner or two-day guest: new enough that the coaches haven't devoured it, a short uphill walk from town โ its audience a calm afternoon's, queueless.
