Bin el Ouidane Lake is the reservoir behind a dam on the El-Abid river in Azilal Province, central Morocco, about 28 km south of Beni Mellal in a straight line. It lies between the Middle Atlas and the High Atlas. The arch dam was built between 1949 and 1953 for hydroelectric power and irrigation. Its 135 MW power station produces about 287 gigawatt-hours a year, and water from the lake irrigates about 69,500 hectares of the Beni Moussa and Tadla plains. Clear turquoise and blue water spreads in winding arms between red and green mountains dotted with trees. The mountains are mirrored on the still surface, and red cliffs show along the shore when the water level drops. Visitors come to relax on the shore, kayak, swim and take boat rides, and stay in hotels and campsites overlooking the water. The lake makes a good stop on the way to the nearby Ouzoud Falls; spring is the loveliest season.
