Biribiri State Park protects about 17,000 hectares of the Serra do Espinhaço near Diamantina: quartz ridges, savanna, rocky fields and forest along the streams, between 720 and 1,480 metres. Created in 1998, it is named after the Fazenda Biribiri, and inside it lies an abandoned village built for the workers of a textile factory, now one of its sights. A well-kept dirt road leads in, fine for cars, and the entrance is 13 km from central Diamantina. About 6 km from the entrance the Cachoeira da Sentinela has a pool for swimming, and the Cachoeira dos Cristais, 12 km in, can be reached by car. The 20-kilometre Caminho dos Escravos trail crosses the interior, and traces of gold and diamond working remain. Wildlife includes the maned wolf, puma, giant anteater and the rare hyacinth visorbearer hummingbird. Facilities are minimal, so bring water and food; admission has been free.
