Bitan is a scenic area on the Xindian River in Xindian District, New Taipei, northern Taiwan, about 9 km south of the capital, Taipei, in a straight line. Its name means emerald-green pool, after the colour of the water. The Xindian River is one of the three main tributaries of the Tamsui River, flowing 82 km through New Taipei and the capital; more than four million Taipei residents draw most of their drinking water from it. At Bitan the river widens into a calm, deep pool ringed by green hills. The white Bitan Suspension Bridge spans the river here, colourful swan pedal boats line the bank, and small wooden boats rowed by a boatman cross between the banks on an old ferry route. Hills, bridges and buildings are mirrored in the green water, and walking paths and flower gardens line the shores. Visitors stroll across the suspension bridge and along the banks, rent pedal boats, and some take the old ferry boat. It is close to Xindian station on the Taipei Metro, making an easy half-day outing.
