Lijiang's most famous image, a clear pool in Jade Spring Park at the foot of Elephant Hill, a short walk north of the old town, created in 1737 under the Qing. On clear days the white peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain mirror on its water with its white marble bridge and the multi-roofed Moon-Embracing Pavilion, a scene that has become a symbol of all of Yunnan. The park spreads among trees, waterways, bridges and old pavilions, where townspeople stroll in the morning; it was declared a water conservation area in 2010 after the pool ran dry in some years. Entry is free or covered by the old-town maintenance fee, per visitor guides. Early morning on a clear day is best, when the snow mountain shows clearly before the clouds gather.
