An open-air museum in a valley in the Black Forest, showing the traditional farmhouses of the region. The houses are not models but original buildings: taken apart at their original sites, moved and rebuilt here. The traditional Black Forest farmhouse has a distinctive shape: an enormous low roof that almost reaches the ground, sheltering the living quarters, the barn and the store under one roof. The idea was to stay in one place through a long winter with heavy snow. You go into the houses and walk through their rooms, kitchens and barns. The oldest dates from 1612 and still stands where it was built, with the rest of the museum arranged around it. There are also working craft workshops โ carpentry, baking, weaving โ and farm animals. Important: the site is in the Gutach valley, about fifty-five kilometres south of Baden-Baden. A full day by car, and rather harder by public transport.
