Slovenia's oldest castle on its highest rock: Bled Castle has crowned a 130-metre cliff above the lake since 1011 — walls, two towers and two courtyards on two levels, and the view from the upper terrace is the picture: island, lake and Alps in one frame, the country's most famous vista. Inside are the regional history museum, a chapel with frescoes, an old Gothic press that prints you a certificate, a wine cellar kept by a monk, a forge and craft workshops — and a terrace restaurant with the view. An hour's tour, and the upper courtyard alone earns the ticket at sunset. Ascend from the lake by a forest path in fifteen minutes or drive to the car park; there is no lift.
