Blidinje is a karst plateau in Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the heart of the Dinaric Alps between the Čvrsnica, Čabulja and Vran mountains, about 31 km northwest of Mostar in a straight line. It is a nature park and an important groundwater reserve in the karst. Melting glaciers from Čvrsnica during the last two ice ages created this open, barren valley. It stretches 15 to 25 km at 1,150 to 1,300 metres, covering 513 square kilometres, and includes the Dugo Polje field, Blidinje Lake and other valleys, with significant cultural and historical heritage. Wide open grassy pastures stretch between towering grey rocky mountains, with the shallow, calm Blidinje Lake in the middle mirroring the peaks. Stone shepherds' huts are scattered across it, and herds of horses and sheep graze freely. Visitors hike and cycle on the plateau, climb the surrounding peaks and stroll around the lake. In winter it becomes a small ski area; mountain weather is changeable, so bring warm clothes.
