The winter palace of the Bogd Khan, Mongolia's last king and religious leader, also known as the Green Palace. It is now one of the country's oldest and richest museums, preserving the life of the Mongolian court in the early 20th century. Visitors enter through a painted, carved wooden gate into a series of courtyards lined by seven small temples with curving Chinese roofs and bright decoration, which now display fine Buddhist art. At the far end stands the white two-storey winter palace in European style, with green wooden windows. The palace holds the belongings of the king and his wife: the throne, furniture, embroidered robes and gifts from rulers around the world, including a ger covered in snow-leopard skins and a collection of curious stuffed animals he gathered. A small entry fee; sources differ on the amount. June to September is the best time; winters are bitter, with temperatures far below freezing.
