Train or bus from Bratislava to Prievidza (about three hours) then a local bus or a twenty-minute walk — the journey is long, so a car or an organised tour is the sensible choice.

The fairy-tale castle, and Slovakia's most visited: Bojnice, with its conical towers and steep grey roofs, looks drawn by Disney — because Count Ján Ferenc Pálffy rebuilt it between 1889 and 1910 in imitation of the châteaux of the Loire, on top of a genuine twelfth-century castle. The interior lives up to it: a golden hall with a ceiling copied from a Venetian church, furnished state rooms, a chapel holding a fourteenth-century Italian altarpiece counted among Slovakia's most precious objects, and a natural cave beneath the castle reached by stairs — formed in the rock millions of years ago and used as its well. Around it stand Slovakia's oldest zoo and ancient lime trees, one of them said to be seven hundred years old. In season the International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits stages night performances — the most famous Slovak event of its kind. Two hours from Bratislava by car.
