Bombinhas, the smallest municipality in Santa Catarina by area, is a peninsula on the «Emerald Coast» with about twenty thousand people, famous as Brazil's «capital of ecological diving» for its clear water and its closeness to the Arvoredo Marine Biological Reserve. Azorean settlers founded the village of Nova Ericeira in 1817, which became the town of Porto Belo; Bombinhas was one of its districts until it became a municipality in 1992. In the 1960s the first holidaymakers began building homes here. The peninsula has many varied beaches: calm Bombas and Bombinhas for families, little Sepultura with clear water for snorkelling, Quatro Ilhas with its four islets, and wide Mariscal fringed by restinga vegetation. Diving trips to Arvoredo and boat trips along the coast leave from its beaches. It gets crowded in summer, so spring or autumn is a better time to visit.
