The Bosque da Ciência, or Science Forest, is a green space on the campus of the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA) in Manaus. It opened to the public in 1995 to bring science closer to people and has become a favourite family outing in the city, welcoming more than 140,000 visitors in 2025. Visitors walk trails among Amazon trees and may meet small monkeys, sloths and birds living free. Its best-known attractions are the tanks of Amazonian manatees, the «peixe-boi», cared for and rehabilitated by the institute, and the giant otter enclosure, along with exhibitions on the Amazon and its research and a display tent about the manatee. It usually opens Tuesday to Friday in the morning and afternoon with a lunch break, and on weekends and holidays from 9:00 to 16:00 without a break, closing on Mondays for maintenance; the fee is a token sum, with children and seniors free. It is an ideal place to meet Amazon wildlife before heading into the forest.
