The tomb of Habib Bourguiba, independent Tunisia's first president, in his birthplace of Monastir. He built it in his lifetime as a family tomb and was laid to rest here after his death in 2000; it stands at the edge of the old Sidi el-Mezri cemetery near the ribat. A long paved avenue lined with trees leads to a white marble building crowned by a gilded dome and flanked by two minarets, mixing traditional Tunisian architecture with a modern touch. Inside, his marble tomb lies beneath the dome, with small rooms around it displaying his personal belongings: glasses, pens, clothes, documents and photographs from his political life, from the struggle for independence to his years in power. Entry is free and it opens daily, per visitor guides, from 9 am to 4 pm in winter and later in summer. Dress modestly: it is a tomb set in a cemetery.
