Bandung's best-known historic street, a short cobbled stretch lined with art deco colonial buildings from the 1920s and 1930s, when Bandung was nicknamed the Paris of Java and Europeans strolled among its elegant cafes and shops. Today the old buildings house cafes, restaurants, art galleries and shops, painters display their canvases on the pavements, and the street comes alive in the evening with lights and music. At weekends it is sometimes closed to cars and becomes a pedestrian promenade. Wandering is free and always possible. Note that some cafes and bars on the street serve alcohol, so choose the family-friendly halal cafes and restaurants, of which the area has many. The street is close to the Asian-African Conference Museum and the Grand Mosque, so make them one walk through the centre, best from late afternoon into the evening.
