Chamonix's eternal question: the Aiguille is higher, fiercer, dearer; the Brévent warmer, gentler in altitude, cheaper, with the fuller Mont Blanc view and more actual walking. Short clear stay: Aiguille. Families, walkers, sun-seekers: Brévent — and a two-day visitor takes both.
From Planpraz: the famous Grand Balcon Sud towards La Flégère, a relatively easy two and a half hours of continuous views (return by the Flégère lift) — among the Alps' finest family paths. Around the summit itself trails are rockier and shorter.
Chamonix outfits launch from Planpraz daily in season: fifteen to thirty minutes over the valley with a professional pilot, from about age 5 within weight limits, from around €130. A day's notice usually books it — and the memory, by consensus, does not fade.

The Brévent is the facing balcony: a 2,525-metre summit on the valley's other side, whose decisive gift is that it faces Mont Blanc entire — on the Aiguille du Midi you stand on the mountain and cannot see it whole; from the Brévent you sit before it as before a painting. The ascent is two stages from the town's edge: gondolas to mid-station Planpraz — meadows, a terrace restaurant, family walking trails — then a cable car to the rocky top and its circular view. This side is the sunny, warmer one, and its gentler altitude suits anyone the Aiguille's height wearied. The Brévent is also paragliding's capital: pilots leap from its slopes over the valley all season — a continuous free airshow from the terraces, and tandem jumps for anyone tempted to try.

A sunny mid-station of family trails and a terrace restaurant.
Wing after wing over the valley all season — tandems for the daring.
