An artificial lake north-west of Brno created by a dam on the Svratka river built between 1936 and 1940, and the city's principal summer escape. It runs about ten kilometres and is surrounded by wooded hills with walking and cycling routes. Its shores hold beaches, kiosks and restaurants, and swimming is permitted in certain seasons depending on water quality. What distinguishes it is a public boat line: a small fleet of electric boats operating as part of Brno's public transport network — you pay an ordinary transport fare and sail. The line runs seasonally from roughly April to October. In the middle of the lake stands Veveří Castle on a hill above the water, a medieval fortress rebuilt many times and served by the boats. The lake suffered for decades from toxic algal blooms in summer, and was treated by a large environmental project that improved water quality considerably. An open public area, free to enter.

North-west of Brno on the Svratka river
One of the oldest and largest castles in Moravia, originating in the thirteenth century. It passed through many owners and was rebuilt in different styles. In the twentieth century it deteriorated badly: used during the Second World War and then neglected under socialism until it was close to a ruin. It is being gradually restored today and parts are open on a ticket, reached by boat from the lake or by road.
By tram to the last stop at Bystrc and a short walk to the pier; the whole journey is about half an hour from the centre on an ordinary transport ticket. From there you can take the boat, walk the shore or hire a bicycle. Hot days in July and August are very busy — mornings or weekdays are better.
