The best-known sunrise hike near Kuala Lumpur: a hill covered in tall golden grass that you climb in the dark before dawn to reach the top with the first light, watching the sun rise over misty valleys and hills and oil palm plantations to the horizon. The hill has several peaks in a row; most visitors reach the first in under an hour, and the third, the highest, after a further climb. The trail is exposed with almost no shade, some sections are steep with ropes to help, and it turns slippery after rain. Since April 2025 a permit from the Selangor Forestry Department, booked on its website for about five ringgit a person at least two days in advance, has been required, and climbing without one can bring a heavy fine. Some trails cross private land whose owners charge an extra fee. Set off around five in the morning to arrive before sunrise, with a head torch, water and shoes with good grip, and come down before the heat builds. You will need a car, as there is no public transport to the trailhead.
