One of Bali's strangest natural sights, on Nusa Penida island south-east of Bali: a round cove ringed by cliffs, which the sea enters through a huge rock arch as if the cliff had broken, forming a wide turquoise pool where waves crash. Its local name is Pasih Uug. A path runs around the cove along the cliff edge, the view different from every angle. A few minutes' walk away is Angel's Billabong, a natural rock pool on the ocean's edge that fills with clear water at low tide and is pounded by waves at high tide. There is a token parking or entry fee. The island is reached by fast boat from Sanur in about 45 minutes, then by car and driver on rough roads. An important warning: swimming in Angel's Billabong is dangerous, as waves have swept visitors out to sea, so only go in at a completely calm low tide, with supervision. Combine it with Kelingking Beach and Crystal Bay on a day tour of the island. Stay behind the barriers at the cliff edges.
