Rolling hills

On the southern side of the Tengger caldera, away from the grey sand, a broad grassy savanna spreads out, ringed by soft rolling hills that people nicknamed Teletubbies Hill for their likeness to the famous television show. The contrast with the volcanic sand nearby is one of Bromo's loveliest surprises. The savanna changes colour with the seasons: bright green in and after the rainy season, golden brown late in the dry season. Much of it burned in a September 2023 fire started by a flare at a photo shoot, and the grass has since grown back. The way there passes the caldera's towering walls clad in green. Access is included in the park ticket; a jeep is practically essential given the distance, and it is usually added to the sunrise tour at little extra cost. Ask your jeep driver to include it with the Whispering Sands. It is loveliest between January and May when it is green, bearing in mind tracks can be muddy after rain.
